Singaporeans love food.

If you are a foreigner reading this you might be thinking, love, really? That’s such a mighty strong word to use.

But if you take into consideration just how many restaurants there are in this tiny city, you might start to think otherwise.

In fact, the word obsessed might be a better fit here.

That’s right.

Singaporeans are food obsessed.

Source

A report that was published last year showed that Singaporeans are eating more and more over the last two decades.

Why?

Because of busy lifestyles and the amount of food choices that we have in our city.

This is further highlighted by the introduction of the Michelin Guide in Singapore in 2016.

Singapore has the distinction of being the first South East Asian country to get a Michelin Guide and in the first edition of the Michelin Guide Singapore, we have set the precedent for having the first Asian street stalls to be awarded Michelin Stars.

Which, in case you do not know already (if you are Singaporean, shame on you), is Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle and Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle.

Or as we like to refer to it locally, Tai Hwa Bak Chor Mee and Liao Fan Hawker Chan.

Source

With all that said, if you are looking for a place to rent in Singapore but cannot yet decide on where to stay, maybe a decision based on the district with the best food would be your best bet.

So, in true blue Singaporean fashion, let us show you which districts have the most Michelin Guide approved restaurants in Singapore.

Oh yes just in case you are wondering why there are so many restaurants, we have included those that have the Michelin Plate distinction as well.

Since the inception of the Michelin Guide, other than the coveted Michelin Stars and the introduction of the Bib Gourmand, there have been other restaurants in the guide with no distinction.

So finally, a new category has been created for this, the Michelin Plate distinction.

You can call it the L’Assiette Michelin as well. But it just means that the restaurant has quality food, but just did not manage to earn the highest award.

Think of it as a third place ranking, if you will.

And the overwhelming winner of the most number of Michelin Guide restaurants is District 1 with 62 listings (out of 238 if you are interested)!

No real surprises here as this area is chock full of food options.

There is a good mix of food as well, from pricey options of the Michelin Star big boys, to the more humble hawker fare.

With the closure of the only 3 Michelin Star in Singapore, Joel Robuchon, we are left with a number of 2 Michelin Star establishments. Namely Braci, Shoukouwa and Waku Ghin.

All of which require a pretty penny to dine there.

District 1 also happens to hold the accolade of the cheapest Michelin Star restaurant in the world, Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle.

So if you happen to work in the CBD area and are looking for a place to rent with great dining options, District 1 is the place to be at.

With Orchard Road well known as a shopping destination for tourists, it is fitting that District 9 is the second district on our list with 35 listings!

The only surprise here is how far it lags behind District 2, with almost half of the places only.

Source

If you look down the list, you can see that most options are on the higher side of pricing, so if you are looking for a district to stay at with cheaper dining alternatives, District 9 is not the best place to be living at.

Also its worth nothing that despite fewer listings, District 9 has the most Michelin Starred restaurants on this list, with 12 being featured here, as compared to the 11 from District 1.

Talk about a star studded dining destination.

With its close proximity to District 1 and its central location, it is an easy job to predict that District 2 will figure somewhere quite far up the list. After all, the Tanjong Pagar area is known to be host to a lot of good food in Singapore.

Food prices in District 2 are not as high as in District 9 in general, and incorporate quite a wide variety of cuisines.

Source

District 2 is definitely a great place to live in, and the abundance of good food options is a testament to that.

Of course, there are also many other districts with amazing food in Singapore. If you would like to view the rest of the Michelin Guide Singapore edition, you can drop us a message at hello@renthero.com.sg!
